Application Instructions for 2020 SDU Undergraduate Admissions

Shandong University, founded in 1901 under the direct jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education, is a key comprehensive university with a long history, a variety of disciplines, strong academic strength, and distinctive characteristics, which has great influence both at home and abroad and has been selected as A-class university in the construction of world class university. There are at present 12 general disciplines for undergraduates and postgraduates, namely philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management, and fine arts. Currently, 16 disciplines rank top 1% of ESI world rankings for academic influence and contribution. Shandong University has signed cooperation agreements with more than 200 schools in over 30 countries and regions.

In order to recruit outstanding international undergraduate students, we hereby formulate this application instruction.

I. Eligibility for Application

1. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens in good physical and mental health, aged between 18 and 25, and possess a valid foreign passport with a validity of at least six months. Relevant supporting documents will be needed for applicants who are under the age of 18 at the point of application and entry. For further information on the exact documents required please send us an e-mail through the contact details provided at the bottom.  

2. The eligibility for applicants who hold a foreign passport but used to be a Chinese citizen, will be in accordance with Document No.83 (2009) of the PRC Ministry of Education.

3. Academic qualification:

- Applicants for undergraduate programs must have a graduation certificate of a senior high school with good academic performance.

Note: Applicants who have not graduated yet must submit an expected graduation certificate certified by their current institution. It should contain the expected date of graduation. When admitted to SDU, the applicant must provide an original graduation certificate upon registration. Failure to do so will invalidate their admission offer.

II. Application Date

 January the 15th to June the 15th, 2020 (Note: the deadline for Chinese Government Scholarship application is March 31st, 2020).

III. Application Procedure

All the international students must apply through the SDU Online Application System for International Students at http://www.apply.sdu.edu.cn.

Chinese Government Scholarship applicants must complete two online applications and one paper-based application by March the 31st. First, they must complete the online applications via the following two systems:

1) SDU Online Application System for International Students at http://www.apply.sdu.edu.cn;

2) CSC Online Application System at http://www.campuschina.org (institution code: 10422).

Chinese Government Scholarship type B applicants must also send their application materials by post to the Admission Office of SDU International Students Admission Office of Department of International Affairs. IV. Academic Programs

In addition to programs taught in Chinese-medium there are also English taught programs available for international applicants. Applicants can only apply for one program. Chinese Government Scholarships are only available for applicants who apply for programs provided in Chinese. The information for Undergraduate programs in the fall of 2020 is as follows:

     Language requirements

Chinese-taught

1. New HSK Level 4 (210 points or higher, HSK is a standard Chinese proficiency test). You can find detailed information at www.chinesetest.cn.

2. The only exception of the Chinese proficiency test requirement is for applicants who have obtained their highest degree in an institution where the primary language of instruction is Chinese. Then official proof must be submitted.

English-taught

1. All applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit the results of the IELTS (6.0 or above) or TOEFL (iBT) (80 or above/TOEFL Mybest Scores are accepted, DI code: C296) or other equivalent certificates of English proficiency.

2. Applicants will be exempt from providing English proficiency test results if one of the following criteria is met:

a. Native English speakers (U.K., U.S., Canada, New-Zealand, Australia).

b. Applicants who have obtained their highest degree in an institution where the primary language of instruction is English. Then official proof must be submitted.

2. Graduation certificate / document of the expected graduation date (must be notarized)

3. Official, up-to-date transcripts for all high-school courses the applicant has undertaken

4. Personal Statement (PS) in Chinese or English

Note:

- Applicants for English-medium programs must submit an English PS.

- In addition to self-introduction, a PS should at least address the following questions: why are you applying for SDU? Why does your chosen course subject area interest you? What is your study plan in SDU?

5.Certificate of language proficiency

6. Completed Foreigner Physical Examination Form (valid for 6 months)

7. After obtaining an e-offer, applicants may be required to submit their proof of funding documentation (e.g. a bank statement). Chinese Government Scholarship recipients will be exempt from the above.

8. Any other supplementary materials

                  Notes

1. Applicants should maintain the highest standards of candor and upload the scanned version of all needed documentation on time.

2. All documents in languages other than Chinese and English must be officially translated into English/Chinese and certified by your institution.  

3. Incomplete applications will not be processed; the University will ask the applicant to complement needed materials if necessary.

 

VI. Registration

After being admitted, all international students are required to register at SDU according to the date stated in the admission letter.

3. Medical Insurance Premiums

According to the regulations of the PRC Ministry of Education, all international students must be covered by the Comprehensive Health Insurance Plan for Foreign Students throughout their entire period of study. SDU international students must purchase the insurance plan upon registration at SDU by submitting copies of their passports. The cost of the insurance plan is 800 RMB/year per person. International students who fail to do so will see their enrollment canceled.

Chinese Government Scholarship students are exempt from the above and automatically covered.

VIII. Visa

Admitted students must apply for a study visa at the Chinese Embassy/Consulate/ Visa Centre in their home country with the Admission Notice and JW 201/202 Form. International students who will study in China for less than 6 months should apply for the X2 Visa. Students who will study in China for more than 6 months are required to obtain the X1 visa. To stay in China legally, it is mandatory for X1 visa holders to apply for the Residence Permit within 30 days after entry by submitting their application to SDU International Student Affairs Office in a timely manner.

Chinese University Program (Type B)

Chinese University Program is a full scholarship for designated Chinese universities and certain provincial education offices in specific provinces or autonomous regions to recruit outstanding international students to study in China.

Chinese Government Scholarship - Bilateral Program (CGS-BP) Scholarship (Type A)


This includes full or partial scholarships in accordance with the educational exchange agreements or consensus between the Chinese government and governments of other countries, institutions, universities or international organizations. It supports undergraduate students, graduate students, general scholars and senior scholars.

SDU Freshman Scholarship for International Students

The scholarship is set up for the excellent international freshman, in order to support them to successfully finish the academic study. It is mainly divided into three types: Outstanding Scholarship (first-class), Excellent Scholarship (second-class) and Advance Scholarship (third-class).

Jinan Sister City Scholarship

Set up by Jinan Government to attract and encourage more international students from sister cities of Jinan to study and conduct research in Jinan’s institutions.

Qingdao Municipal Government Scholarship for International Students in China

Set up by Qingdao Government to attract more talented international students to pursue their education and conduct research in Qingdao’s institutions.
